The new building, which will house a water park with slides, 25metre swimming pool, gym, climbing wall, squash courts, dance studio and day spa, has been designed to reflect the city’s ribbon weaving past – with the outside appearing to be wrapped by a swirling ribbon.

The building, which will sit on the site of Spire and Christchurch House, next to Christchurch spire - is being designed by international architects FaulknerBrowns. The circular building will be dramatically lit at night.

Council and NHS staff will be moving out of Christchurch House and Spire House this year. Construction work is set to start on site next spring with a planned opening date in late 2018.

Architects FaulknerBrowns has designed innovative and award winning buildings including Derby Arena, a velodrome for the Pan Am games in Toronto, the canoeing and sailing centres for London’s Olympics in 2012 and an Olympic standard Aquatics centre in Dubai.

Water Technology Inc. (WTI), who specialise in water park development, are providing specialist advice on the design of the pools and indoor features which could include a wave pool, lazy river, children’s splash pad, children’s play structure and six water slides.

WTI has designed water parks, aquatic leisure facilities and water playgrounds across the world and is currently working in 15 different countries using the latest technology to design and engineer a mix of rides and slides for all ages. Since 1983, the team has worked on a rage of projects including SeaWorld, Center Parcs, Merlin Entertainments and Yasisland in Abu Dhabi.

The planning application for the building is expected to be submitted to Coventry City Council in May.

It is estimated that 1.3 million people a year will visit the new splash pool.
