Wasps Netball have announced a star-studded line-up for the new season
The club, which will compete in the Vitality Netball Superleague, has signed eight leading players ahead of the new season which starts in February.
The signings include 17-year-old attacking sensation George Fisher from Hertfordshire Mavericks who was capped by England U17s at just 14 years of age, and is still completing her final year of studies at college.
Five players are also making the move from last year’s Vitality Netball Superleague champions Surrey Storm, bringing a wealth of domestic and international experience. This includes defenders Hannah Reid, Francesca Williams, Amy Flanagan, Josie Huckle and centre Sophia Candappa.
The young and talented GA/WA Lucy Harris arrives from Yorkshire Jets alongside arguably one of the best defenders in the league, Australian GD/WD Samantha May who joins from Hertfordshire Mavericks.
Wasps Director of Netball Tamsin Greenway, who joined the club earlier this summer, has spent the last six weeks building her squad ahead of the start of training in October.
The former international, who led Surrey Storm to the title last year, still has four more names to add to the squad but described herself as “extremely excited” by the new signings. She said:
Wasps have made it plain that they want their new netball team to be a major force in the game and being able to assemble a squad from scratch has been hugely exciting.
I think it’s fair to say that the announcement about the formation of Wasps Netball has captivated people across the sport – and I expect today’s signings will do the same.
Obviously, the only thing which really matters is results on the court and how we fare during what is bound to be a competitive season, but I am extremely excited by the signings we have made so far – and don’t forget there will be more to come.
Fans will get a first glimpse of Wasps Netball’s new side in February at the newly-named Ericsson Indoor Arena when the Vitality Netball Superleague gets underway.
David Armstrong, chief executive officer of Wasps, added:
We’re delighted to be able to put together such a competitive squad that fits within the league’s salary cap.
We’re confident these signings will generate a real buzz amongst netball fans in the Midlands as we build up to our first league match.
